A Virgin A Virgin
This print is a reproduction of Abbott Handerson Thayer's (1849–1921) painting A Virgin, on view in the Freer Gallery of Art. The artist began this portrait of his children Gladys, Mary, and Gerald, soon after their mother died in 1891. He originally envisioned the central figure, Mary, as Flora, the Greek goddess of flowers, but as the work progressed he decided to make her a Greek "Victory" figure instead, with clouds billowing behind her like wings.

Cranes Cranes
This print is a reproduction of a six-panel screen in the Freer Gallery of Art. The original painting, Cranes, is by Japanese artist Ogata Korin (1658–1716). This print shows ten stylized cranes moving across the screen in cautious cadence. Korin arranged the composition to emphasize the patterns formed by the cranes. The brilliant gold ground, interrupted at one edge by the incursion of a swirling wave, adds to the sumptuousness of the design. Korin's bold, decorative screens epitomize the luxurious taste of the wealthy merchant class in Kyoto during the Edo period, 1600–1700s. (full size print: 18 3/4" x 35")
