About the Series
Initiated in 2001, Scientific Research in the Field of Asian Art is a series of biannual symposia whose purpose is to highlight recent scientific and technical studies of the arts of Asia. The most recent symposia have examined the sculptural arts and the pictorial arts in an effort to show the effect of scientific methodologies on broader questions of a technical, historical, or art historical nature. The symposia are supported by a bequest from John Thacher and named for Edward Waldo Forbes, a past director of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and an early proponent of the application of technical examination to the study of art.
