![]() The first Forbes Symposium occurred in 2001 on the fiftieth anniversary of the initial pursuit of scientific endeavors at the Freer Gallery. The biannual series presents the results of previously unpublished scientific research on art from Asian cultures. Researchers discuss the impact of their work on broader issues in the fields of art history, curatorship, and conservation. The first Forbes Symposium surveyed the current state of scientific research in Asian art. Subsequent symposia have focused on topical areas of importance in the field. In addition to providing a means of disseminating research results, the symposia provide a forum for discussion and interaction among an international group of researchers tasked with the care and investigation of Asian art. The Forbes Symposia are supported by the Edward W. Forbes Fund. This bequest to the Freer Gallery was made by John Thacher in honor of his former colleague, Edward Waldo Forbes, a past director of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and an early proponent of applying technical examination to the study of art. Papers presented at the symposia are available as a series of proceedings volumes. A list of previous symposia is given below with links to details about proceedings that are currently available.
