Meet the 2016-2017 Freer|Sackler Teen Council


Grace Chung

I am a sophomore at McLean High School in Virginia, and I try my best to get involved in what I love. Some of the activities I participate in are marching band, symphonic band, art, Relay for Life, and quiz bowl/It's Academic. Puns, tea, and fan art are my guilty pleasures.

Yingzhi Dai

I am a junior at School Without Walls in Washington, DC. I am part of my school's orchestra and the Chinese Culture Club. I love anime and manga, and I am a fan of East Asian culture. Some of my interests include listening to K-Pop, J-Pop, and Mandopop, as well as making origami.

Veronica Apple Gould

I am a sophomore at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia. I love studying art history and creative writing, as well as sewing for fun. I work on costuming for the productions at my school, and when soccer season ends, I try to go to as many meetings of the ukulele club as I can.

Karly Grey

I am a senior at Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC. I study literary media and communications there. I love journalism and all forms of art. My writing has been published in multiple places. I also love laughing, movies, and crafts. Right now I am focusing on getting into college and finding the perfect prom dress.

Qifan Huang

I am an exchange student at School Without Walls in Washington, DC. I am a member of the school’s science bowl team, robot team, field hockey team, and model UN club. At my high school in my home country, I am the president of the student union and a member of the art club and robot team. I have been studying art for ten years. My favorite things are painting, photography, mathematics, chemistry, international affairs, and documentaries. My favorite place in the world is a museum.

Meera Ilahi

I am a senior at Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland. I am honor council president and captain of the crew team; I love working with people. My favorite class has been ceramics, which I have been taking for the past three years. I take inspiration from anything and everything. I have also been studying Mandarin for five years and recently went on a trip to China. I love traveling, photography, and trying new foods. I hope to pursue architecture in college next year.

Patrick Kirwin

I am a sophomore at Albert Einstein High School in Kensington, Maryland. I am in an environmental club, and I have started a film club at my school. I was born in New York but I have lived in Ohio, Michigan, and many African countries. I speak French and like to travel. Some of my favorite things are playing basketball and soccer, listening to music, watching and making movies, visiting Smithsonian museums, and working in a team. I was part of the Freer|Sackler Teen Council last year.

Anna Liu

I am a senior at McLean High School in Virginia with a heavy interest in the arts. My favorite mediums are pencil and acrylic (sometimes I take a stab at oil paint). Recently, my interests have gravitated toward ancient Chinese art and calligraphy after my experience at the Palace Museum in Beijing. As the president of my school’s art history club, I sometimes gather classmates and friends for museum trips. This will be my second year as a member of the Freer|Sackler Teen Council.

Katie Morrow

I am a junior at Northwood High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. I am a member of Mock Trial, the debate team. I am an alumnus of the High School Diplomats Program, through which I studied Japanese culture at Princeton University. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering at the animal shelter, dancing, and painting.

Harin Ok

I am a sophomore at Oakton High School in Vienna, Virginia. I am a member of the Lincoln Douglas Debate Team, Science Olympiad, and Oakton Musical Ensemble. Also, I play the violin in American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras. Some of my favorite hobbies include playing the violin, baking, and hanging out with my friends.

Zhané Silvers

I am a senior at the SEED School of Washington, DC, and my favorite subjects are history and art. I am the treasurer of the student government association at my school. I play volleyball and run track, and I am a mentor for two sixth graders. Some of my favorite hobbies are swimming, sewing, helping others, reading, and listening to music.

Abubakr Uqdah

I am a homeschooled junior in Washington, DC. History and culture have always been my favorite subjects to study, which is why I have always had an interest in museums and art. Living in this metropolitan area has given me the opportunity to visit every museum and memorial in the city. During my free time, I work on my serious passion for the culinary arts, business, and restaurants. I plan to own and operate my own restaurant by the age of 22.

The Freer|Sackler is closed for renovation and reinstallation. The popular exhibition Turquoise Mountain: Artists Transforming Afghanistan is still on view in the International Gallery. (Enter through the Ripley Center.) Join us for our reopening celebration on October 14–15, 2017.
