Richard Louie Memorial Internship for High School Students of Asian Descent

The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, the national museums of Asian art at the Smithsonian Institution, offer a paid internship for high school students of Asian descent. The Richard Louie Memorial Internship was established in 1994 to honor Richard Louie, former associate director of the Freer and Sackler, and is made possible by funds donated through the Richard Louie Memorial Fund. Its goal is to offer practical experience in a museum setting to young people of Asian descent.

Interns are provided with opportunities to accomplish a specific independent project. In addition, the Freer and Sackler staff makes every effort to include interns in ongoing public and behind-the-scenes museum activities.

A stipend of $1500 is awarded to interns upon the successful completion of a two hundred-hour internship experience. The minimum of two hundred internship hours must be completed within the span of one year. Since their schedules are flexible and unique to each project, interns arrange their schedules in consultation with their supervisors. No housing or transportation is provided.

Interns are selected by the staff of the museums’ participating departments. Applicants should indicate three departments of interest: Administration/Finance/Human Resources; Archives; Conservation and Scientific Research; Collections Management (Registrar); Curatorial; Education and Public Programs; Exhibition Management; Information Technology; Publications; Design and Production; Library; Membership and Development; Photography; Public Affairs and Marketing; Rights and Reproductions; and Museum Shops.
