In Memoriam

The Freer|Sackler joins the scholarly community in mourning the recent passing of John Rosenfield (1924–2013) and James Cahill (1926–2014), two giants of Asian art history. Cahill and Rosenfield were the two most recent recipients of the Freer Medal, awarded by the Freer|Sackler for “distinguished contribution to knowledge and understanding of Oriental civilizations as reflected in their arts.” We remember their visits with us with great fondness and are grateful for their many contributions to scholarship, to the training of the next generations of scholars, and to the work of this museum.

As renovation work continues in the Freer Gallery, the Sackler Gallery also will close on July 10, 2017. This museum-wide closure will allow us to completely reinstall our exhibitions and revitalize features to improve your visit. Both spaces will reopen on October 14, 2017, when we will welcome the public back to the Freer|Sackler: two galleries, one destination. For your safety, all visitors will have their bags checked. See the complete list of restricted items and bag sizes.
