Detail, Black Raku tea bowl

Through January 1, 2007
Freer Gallery of Art

A Japanese saying coined during the Edo period (1615–1868) lists the three most popular ceramic wares as "First, Raku; second, Hagi; third Karatsu." The tea ceremony ceramics that Charles Freer collected by 1906 included outstanding examples of all three classic wares. The tea bowls on view will include some that have been reidentified through recent research.
