Through April 22, 2007
Arthur M. Sackler Gallery

The Byzantine Collection at Dumbarton Oaks houses important metalwork created during the Byzantine Empire (324–1453) and by related cultures in the ancient and medieval Mediterranean worlds. Dumbarton Oaks has generously lent to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery 36 objects from among these esteemed works while the museum undergoes renovations and is closed until autumn 2007. The centerpiece of the exhibition is a bronze rearing horse with Himyaritic inscriptions. Additional objects on display include jewelry of the Late Antique and Early Byzantine Periods, fourth through seventh centuries, as well as other objects, such as secular and liturgical vessels made with various metals.
