Celebrate the opening of
Yoga: The Art of Transformation
October 17, 2013
All over the world, millions of people, including twenty million Americans, practice yoga to gain health benefits and find spiritual calm. Practitioners and non-practitioners alike are aware that yoga originated in India, but few know about its rich visual history, which reveals its profound philosophical underpinnings, the social roles played by yogic practitioners, and the significant transformations yoga has undergone on its journey to becoming a part of modern life.
This will change in October, when the Freer and Sackler Galleries present Yoga: The Art of Transformation, the world’s first exhibition about yoga’s visual history. It is destined to be a blockbuster presentation that delights yogic practitioners and lovers of Indian art as it illuminates the rich artistic history of a global phenomenon.
Please plan to join us at the gala celebration on Thursday, October 17, to mark the opening of this amazing exhibition and to kick off its US tour.
