In 2013, Hong Sangsoo began to shift the focus of his films from bungling male protagonists to the women they haplessly pursue. In this romantic chamber piece, a film student named Haewon (Jung Eun-chae) falls into a depression and seeks solace in her ex-lover, a married film professor, played by the late Lee Sun-kyun (Parasite). Their affair threatens his marriage and job, along with Haewon’s sanity. Employing one of his signature ingenious narrative structures, Hong tells her story through her dreams, flashbacks, and diary entries. “The straightforward story’s crystalline complexity,” wrote Richard Brody in The New Yorker, “evokes inner depths with a light touch and conveys raging pain with a puckish glint.” (Dir.: Hong Sangsoo, Korea, 2013, 90 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
