In 1906, at the urging of President Theodore Roosevelt, the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution accepted a generous gift of Asian and American art from collector and connoisseur Charles Lang Freer (18541919). This gift was later housed in what became the first art museum of the Smithsonian Institution: the Freer Gallery of Art.
