1880Moves to Detroit, participates in organization of the Peninsular Car Works with Hecker
1883Becomes vice president and secretary of Peninsular Car Company when it succeeds Peninsular Car Works
Begins collecting European prints
1884Peninsular Car Company constructs plant on Ferry Avenue

The papers include correspondence, diaries, art inventories, financial materials, scrapbooks of clippings on James McNeil Whistler and other press clippings, architectural drawings, stone rubbings, artifacts, files regarding the Biblical manuscripts, and photographs.

Newspaper clippings mostly regarding Freer family members and their French Huguenot ancestry, including articles from, The Independent of New Paltz, New York. There is also a reprint of an 1800 article from the, Ulster County Gazette, a newspaper first published in Kingston, New York, by Samuel S. Freer and Son in 1798.

Internal evidence suggests that Freer may have retained such an arrangement, and he often annotated the top left corner of incoming letters with the date answered. Letters following Freer's death were answered by Katharine Nash Rhoades.
